Profit Sharing: Aligning Success
From the start, Ken Iverson believed that teammates working toward a common goal should share in the rewards of their labor. He put this principle into practice by implementing a profit-sharing program—a system that remains a cornerstone of Nucor’s culture today.
Nucor’s profit sharing ensures that when the company succeeds, teammates share in that success. This approach creates strong alignment between individual effort and company goals, fostering a sense of shared purpose.
Since the company’s transformation in the 1960s, profit sharing has set Nucor apart in American industry. When Ken Iverson led Nucor into steelmaking, he launched the tradition of paying for performance—an innovative move at a time when the industry relied on fixed compensation models. By directly linking employee incentives to company performance, Nucor unlocked new levels of productivity and loyalty.
“We share in the company profits which we help to earn,” Ken Iverson said in 1969. “If we all continue to work together to help the company expand and operate profitably, we will have even more to share together in the future.”
The impact is clear: in 1966, Nucor paid $140,000 into the profit-sharing plan. By 1979, that amount grew to $8 million. In 2022, Nucor paid a record $958,900,000 in profit sharing. Over time, almost $6 billion has been paid out to teammates, reinforcing the company’s commitment to shared success.
